Santa Fe piggyback train 578 at Grandbury, TX

Feb. 24, 1990 was not a good day for the 2-578. The first section left Dallas, TX around 600AM and 2-578 left about two hours later with engines 1564 and Conrail 6345 pulling 36 loads. Just out of Venus, a short in the electrical system killed both engines. Unable to contact the dispatcher on the handset, two crewmen walked a mile to the nearest phone to get help. A crew was called from Cleburne with engines 2716, 3024 and 2913 to tow the piggyback train in. The dead units were set out at Cleburne and the other units turned on the wye to get them pointed west. 2-578 is crossing Granbury Lake, running about seven hours late.
