Santa Fe Railway piggyback train symbol 698 at Cosnino, Arizona

Santa Fe Railway train symbol 698 is in the rock cut just east of Cosnino, AZ on May 26, 1987. The train has engines 5040, BN 8109 and BN 7148. This train was established in 1963 as symbol QLA as a run-thru with the Frisco that originated in Birmingham. It became train 668 in 1971 and became train 698 in 1986. 698 became the QBHLA on Dec. 15, 1989. In the background are the remains of the volcanic cinder cone where the Santa Fe got a lot of its ballast. The Santa Fe shifted to regular rock ballast when it discovered that the cinders were highly abrasive and wore out cross ties much faster than rock ballast. Disk 69
