In 1948 the Clinchfield planned to install US&S CTC from Erwin, TN south to Clichco, VA 120 miles. The work from Erwin to Delano was completed in 1951. In 1951 it planned to extend CTC south to Spartanburg, SC. The CTC machine was in Erwin. In 1953 it completed the CTC installation from Elkhorn City to Spartanburg. At the time there were three northbound passenger trains a week and three southbound passenger trains a week. There were three northbound freights and two southbound freights each day, plus coal, lots of coal.
