Train 788 (York Canyon to Kaiser Steel coal train) is slowing and will stop on the main at Goffs, CA to allow a hot piggyback train to run around it on February 18, 1974. Those were the days of friendly waves from the train crew and constantly lit signals along the Santa Fe. Just after I took this picture, the head brakeman leaned out of the cab window and took a picture of my brother and me. In some railroader's collection there is a picture of two very surprised railfans standing trackside at Goffs. Engine 4640 had recently been refurbished at the San Bernardino shops. A new larger air filter system for the engine intake forced the air tanks to be moved back on either side of the dynamic brake and radiator fans. The engines also had a slightly higher horsepower rating than a standard SD24 at 2625hp. |
