There are several power plants on the Kansas City Southern that use Powder River Basin coal. They are the Kansas City Power and Light La Cygne power plant near Amsterdam, MO; Empire District Electric plant at Asbury, MO; Gulf States Utilities' R. S. Nelson plant at Mossville, LA; Southwestern Electric Power Flint Creek plant at Gentry, AR and Welsh plant near Pittsburg, TX. Southwestern Electric Power is KCS's largest single customer. Coal traffic contributed 30% of KCS's operating revenue until the merger with MidSouth in 1994. On May 6, 1986 Kansas City Southern train 91, a coal train bound for the Welsh plant, waits for a new crew at Heavener, OK. Power on the train is 678, 646, 672, and BN 7193. |
