Hanna Basin coal train at Alda, NE

The other major mining area for the Union Pacific was the Hanna Basin. There were two mining companies in the area: Arch Mineral and Cypress Shoshone Coal (formerly Carbon County Coal Company). Time has about run out on the mines in the Hanna Basin. The Carbon County underground mine opened in 1979. It was shut down for a year in 1986 and then shut down for good in July 2000. This was Wyoming's last underground mine. On June 20, 1980 engines 3657 and 3166 lead a unit coal train loaded in the Hanna Basin through the little hamlet of Alda, NE.

Notice the new welded rail that will soon be replacing the old jointed south rail on the eastbound main.
