Well, I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine train I see
Got some doublestacks and lots a piggybacks
Wonder what symbol it could be

Its hard to soar with the Eagles when you have to work with turkeys. Several years ago a railfan was killed in Winslow Yard. Apparently while trespassing in the yard, he stepped back to better frame a picture of a locomotive and wound up in the path of a train. Trains will be stopping for a crew change at the old fueling racks at the west end of town near where the old US 66 splits into one way streets. With the units in idle and a slight breeze, a train can slip up on you without making a sound. Best advice is to stay off any tracks in the vicinity of Winslow. The railroad police are there to make the yard a safe place to work.

Train 188 slows at East Winslow on May 21, 1989. It will stop at Winslow for a crew change and within ten minutes the train will be accelerating out the west end of town. The train has engines 7439, 7421, and 4008. Notice the plywood boards up on the signal bridge. These boards help block out the sun near sunset. Without them, these signals would be almost impossible to see. In 1930, the Santa Fe installed double track between Winslow and Joseph City.
