Lewis Kingman came through this area in 1880 while surveying a right-of-way for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The little camp he established later took his name. Extra 5621 East is rumbling through Kingman early in the morning of July 16, 1979. By the end of 1923, the Santa Fe had completed double track from Yampai to Topock. The two tracks separate for a short stretch at the north end of town, come together at the station, and then separate again as the tracks drop down through Kingman Canyon and rejoin near Griffith twelve miles to the south. The north track (original mainline) had grades up to 1.8% while the new south track stays around 1.42%. Kingman is at milepost 516 at an elevation of 3,340 feet.
