It is early morning on May 18, 1978 at Vaughn. A train is waiting for Extra 5056 East to clear so it can continue west to Belen. Vaughn is at milepost 788 and was a crew change point until the 1960s. The elevation is 5,925 feet. Vaughn is the only town in New Mexico where the main lines of two railroads cross one another. |
