Late in the afternoon of November 1, 1976 train 968 (Extra 5637 East) is rolling through the crossover switches from SP trackage back to Santa Fe rails. Train 968 generally had a large number of BN cars with a fair number of WP cars plus loads of lumber. The track curving off to the left in the foreground is the south yard lead. The next track over is the SP mainline heading south to Lancaster and Palmdale. The operator at the depot controls the switches and signals at this interlocking as well as the signals on track two from Mojave to Cameron. Disk 48 above

The US 6 bridge over the tracks at the south end of Mojave (East Mojave on the railroad) was completed in 1972. Santa Fe Extra 5619 West comes through the construction and will soon be crawling up the hill toward Tehachapi. Below, a westbound train comes through the 1943 S curve and will enter SP trackage at East Mojave. That is the SP track to Palmdale in the lower right.
