Southern Pacific Railroad Tehachapi Freight Pool power at RowenFive years earlier my brother and I did another walk-in. It was September 1973 and a recent fire had cleared all of the underbrush. It was much easier climbing up the hills without the worry of snakes hiding in the grass. You can see the burned off hillside in the second picture. |

Engines 6917 and 5321 ease downgrade after helping an eastbound train up to Summit. The SD35s (6900-6928) began working in the Tehachapi Freight Pool in early 1965 and replaced the Alco RSD12s. Four were rebuilt in 1974 and were designated SD35E. Ten were rebuilt without turbochargers between 1976 and 1978 and were designated SD35R. The SD39s (5300-5325) began working in the Tehachapi Freight Pool in 1969. These engines used a turbocharged V12 engine in place of the standard V16 used in SD40s. Disk 42 |
