Generally locomotives from the Roseville Freight Pool were traded for Tehachapi Freight Pool power at Bakersfield. However, on February 9, 1974 two GP9s, a U25B, and a SD9 (3602, 3720, 6706, and 4374) are returning to Bakersfield after helping an eastbound up to Summit. Bakersfield must have been short on power to use these light weight four axle units as helper power. This is the location of Tunnel 6. It was 185 feet long and daylighted after the 1952 earthquake. There is more information about the earthquake on the next page. In 1975, the siding at Cliff was extended west around this curve to just in front of Tunnel 5.
The units have just come out of tunnel 3 and are curving into Bealville. You can see the Bealville Caliente road in the background. Between the second and third units is the silver instrument box for the dragging equipment detector. Disk 42
