Santa Fe Railway freight train symbol 809 crossing Tehachapi Creek

Train 809 (Extra 4508 West) was about a mile and half long. It is crossing Tehachapi Creek for the last time. The train is about to enter the horseshoe curve and reverse directions. On the headend are two SD24s, engines 4508 and 4510. The date is October 31, 1976. These engines will soon be rebuilt at the San Bernardino shops increasing the horsepower to 2,625. You will see another picture of this train at the Loop later in this series. Be very cautious here during the summer months. The hills around Bealville and Caliente are crawling with snakes. Disk 41
