Train 991 had been waiting patiently in the siding at Caliente for train 319 to pass. On the point is SD40-2 5050. Train 991 began in 1976 and handled expedited TOFC/COFC traffic from Richmond. It was scheduled out of Richmond at 4:00AM and operated over the Tehachapi Mountains each afternoon. After going around the horseshoe curve at Cliente the grade increases to between 2 and 2.2 percent for the majority of the climb up to Tehachapi. If the dispatcher is on his toes, these engines should remain in run eight for the next hour until the train crests the top of the hill at Summit 27 miles ahead. Disk 40
