This is the other end of tunnel 27 that you saw in the distance. During the Harriman period of reconstruction of tunnels, the engineering department added concrete liners to the first fifty feet of tunnels. The rest of this one still had its the original timber lining. In 1965 the east end of the tunnel collapsed and the railroad daylighted approximately 115 feet of the east end of Tunnel 27. The original east portal and concreted end were left. I had waited a couple hours for another train, but no trains. The sun was setting and I wanted to get out before it got dark.
