Canadian Pacific Railway freight train by Trans-Canada Highway

Extra 5837 East climbs out of the valley at Cathedral on June 27, 1979. Thehighway rests on much of the original roadbed. You can see how much steeper the climb used to be.

On the morning of July 17, 1981 a snow and rock slide came down the mountain in the left part of the picture and covered the track. If you look between the approaching car (that is about to go over the bridge) and the pointed mountain above it, you will see a snow shed. The slide was at the east end (near side) of this snow shed. Crews worked through the day on the 17th and had the railroad working again on the 18th during our return trip. Disk 3
