On June 8, 1987 we were leaving Edwards Air Force Base and saw train 928 going into the siding at Edwards for a meet. The sun has only been up about two hours and it is difficult to take a picture of the eastbound. Train 839 hustles by with engines 3836, 5819, 5068, and 5383. In the siding is train 928 with engines 5353, 5348, 5956, and 9522. |

The town of Muroc was founded in 1910 and named for Corum family, but spelled backwards. Muroc Dry Lake selected by Army Air Corps as bombing and gunnery range in 1933. Muroc Army Air Field was established Oct. 14, 1946. Renamed Edwards Air Force Base in 1956, the installation was expanded to 470 square miles. Edwards Air Force Base grew most rapidly after World War II when the development of jet propulsion and national security made the isolated base a choice spot for testing experimental aircraft. The dry lakes provided huge natural runways and good flying weather almost year round made Edwards a perfect place for flight tests. This portion of the Santa Fe Railway between Mojave and Barstow was built in 1953 to bypass the growing flight test center in Muroc. The new mainline shortened the distance from Mojave to Barstow by 2.5 miles. Disk 50 |
