Southern Pacific westbound train APW is just leaving Garnet, CA on February 2, 1974 and starting the climb up Beaumont Hill. On the point are two Southern Pacific GP9s as helpers assisting an SD45 and a U25B. The traffic on this day's train was light, so the train was filled with empty autoracks on the rear. This was one of those rare days in southern California when you could actually see the mountains.
