Santa Fe Borrowed Power

Santa Fe freight train with UP power

During the 70s when the coal train from Utah was being unloaded at Fontana, the Santa Fe would use the engines to run a freight train from San Bernardino over to Barstow, then pick up a westbound train, and have the units back before the coal was completely unloaded. What appears to be a UP train at first is actually one of these power utilization moves. The train is at Devore in 1978.
