Santa Fe Railway plate girder bridge over the Pecos River at Fort Sumner, NM

Extra 5585 West crosses the Pecos River Bridge just west of Fort Sumner, NM on May 16, 1978. If you look just below the bridge you can see the town in the distance. The bridge was built in 1906 and is 1,500 feet long. At the time the picture was taken, most of the line from Clovis to Belen was single track. Today this bridge is one of only two short single track portions on the line. The other single track segment is between Carnero and Vaughn, where the Santa Fe Railway crossed over the SP on a long fill west of town. Disk 60
