BN2238 leads CNW6876 and BN 6448 pulling train 33 out of the Cascade Tunnel and into Scenic, WA on June 23, 1979. The scar on the mountain in the background is US 2. After the horrible avalanche at Wellington that killed 96 people on March 1, 1910, the Great Northern began building the Cascade Tunnel. The tunnel and line relocation was opened in January 1929. The tunnel is eight miles long has a 1.7% grade against eastbound trains. |
