BN freight train symbol 75 at Hecla, NE

I love the Nebraska Sandhills. There is plenty of train traffic on the railroad and very little traffic on the adjacent highway. Burlington Northern train symbol 75 heads toward Alliance through Hecla, NE on June 16, 1981. It had engine 8001 and 6385 pulling 78 cars.

As we traveled west chasing this train, we heard the following conversation on the scanner.

"There are a couple pretty girls in a car here at the crossing. You better grab Herbie so he doesn't jump."

About a mile later the headend called the conductor again, "Is Herbie still with us?"

The conductor replied, "I had to grab him by the shirt tail, but Herbie didn't jump."
