Just east of the highway crossing the railroad runs through a long cut on a curve. The top of this cut was ideal for photography from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. You could just work your way along the top of this cut and have good light for either east or westbound trains. Train 348 rolls into Cosnino on May 26, 1987. The train has engines 5098, 8107, 8065, and 5827. In the background you can see the cinder cone that the Santa Fe mined for ballast. The mining operation north of Darling started in 1965. The Santa Fe later learned that the pumice from this mine was too abrasive to its crossties. The railroad now uses stone ballast and the number of cars loaded at the mine has dropped from twenty to about three cars a day. Disk 69
