Just around noon the San Manuel Arizona Railroad's train comes into town to exchange cars with the SP. Engines 17 and 16 are GP38s built in 1972. The SMA began operating in 1955 and runs 30 miles south to the San Manuel copper mine and smelter. The smelter produced 325,000 tons of refined copper per year. The mine and smelter shut down in 1999. |

A little later in the afternoon, engines 3412 and 6506 switch the interchange traffic from the Magma Copper Company. Just behind the units is the dumper building. |

Engines 6506 and 3412 are moving the interchange cars down to the yard at Hayden while engines 6511, 3644, 6661, 6600, and 6562 finish shoving the loads through the dumper. Disk 57 |
