Maricopa, Arizona was a hub of activity around 1900. Until the SP completed a line between Wellton and Phoenix in 1924, all of the SP passenger trains came through Maricopa. Passengers to and from the Phoenix area had to transfer to trains operating on a branch line off the SP. An interesting side note is that Phoenix area passengers on today's Amtrak Sunset Limited have to either get on or off at Maricopa. The trains were rerouted to the original mainline when 80 miles of the line between Phoenix and Wellton was taken out of service in June 1996. These pictures are from the Library of Congress.
