As the sun was getting low on the horizon, the action was picking up. The Auto-Train with its three GEs in run eight was picking up speed for the overnight trip to Florida. The Auto-Train began in December 1971 and ran until May 1981. This picture was taken during in July 1974.

The Atlantic Coast Line added 147 upper quadrant semaphore signals Richmond, VA to Pleasant Hill (one mile south of NC state line) on double track in 1914. In 1948, the railroad began a replacement program of old semaphore signals south of Richmond. By the end of 1948, the project had installed 104 US&S color light signals between Richmond and Whitakers, NC 109 miles. Disk 124
